A Modern Family
The dove flies to a branch not but blocks from the basket that sways in a soft ten. The shade that holds all the colours that an eye and mind can envision, floats down from its spot as the dove casts its back on the dreams of life. The feather turns as black as a glistening winters day as the sun reflects from each icy cluster that codes the ground, that a blind man can see. This feather that ways 8 pounds 2 ounces, wakes a man, a father, a homeless person, a deserter that lies on a bench beneath a comforter of the previous events printed daily. Our society loves to recycle. This man sees more awake, his unconscious denies him of what inspires each action that is played on the pathways of life. The wooden bench bleeds with the blood that he has spilled. He let go of his place. He neglected to become what he had became. He allowed himself to do the deed. But yet a back was turned, a heart was broken, another weakened, one lost forever. This man becomes chained to the bench to feel the blood which he created, and allowed to be wasted. This is the closest he has come to being a father. With years streaming from his face, he still feels no remorse. In horror, he still can not understand his misdeeds. This is what has come to be, this is what had no chance from the start. Abandonment created loneliness, which created fear and lead to the feeling that she can not succeed. That she was not ready. The black feather does not absorb any red even though it sinks in it.
An infant, a child, it is merely a heart in a flesh casing. The basket that it lies in becomes a pool that fills further with each drop that seeps from the sky above. The doors at which it cries opened quickly to the deathly cries that had came from the outside. With a single motion the face of God chuckles and does not feel remorse. These doors of acceptance slam shut in the face of purity. A life this new deserves to be given a swimming lesson before being left to float. No laughter is held within it's lungs, only gurgled gasps of helplessness escape from a fresh mouth that was delivered to unwanted hands. The feet which carried the weight of two stepped from a bus, then unloaded it's unwanted cargo to the gates of rejection. This place of help leaks from the roof, water rots the corner posts that let stand the magnificent institution of falsehood that grins with corruption. The building that has angels on its peaks and lava flowing in it's sewers collapses onto a pool that holds a swimmer before his time. Lessons scheduled for one day too late.
For you to Decide
Ended
I can recall from my mind one summer a friend held close to his heart a hand that was not his. To be with him for each pump of blood. Nights spent swimming that always ended with their backs pressed to the pine docks, their eyes spread wide and their minds spread even wider to try and absorb all of the clear nights sky shine. Their conversation never ending, questions hardly ever becoming answered.
"How can the blackness be so great?"
"What do you mean?"
"How can such a dark colour holding such bad and dreadful meaning cover such a great amount of our visual world?"
"Is darkness bad? Do you really fear what is so clear and peaceful?"
"To us it is peaceful and clears our mind only because we are in it together, what is thought of as hell would seem as clear and perfect as this if we lied in the flames together as we do here."
There thoughts are interrupted only for the seconds it takes to look into their apposing eyes and they know they love each other. Why can not everything be as certain?
"Well the blackness brings out the goodness in the stars."
"Maybe you're right. Do you ever wounder if there is more to space then we can see or prove?"
"I guess so, but is God not beyond this?"
"God... to some people, yes God is beyond this. Look at it this way." He roles over to look into her eyes, to hold her closer. The look that he has on his face makes her want to blush and look away but she can not, she is in a trance, the intensity scares some. "Start from beneath us, imagine the centre of the earth as we break through each layer there are different elements. Slowly we hit the surface of the earth where then the dirt, the solid part of the giant rock ends slowly then there is the water then this dock which we lie on. Travelling outwards there is us, our bodies lying here, we also have and end. We are born, live a period of time or distance one could say. then we are over; we end. Go from our bodies towards the stars which hold the beauty of your eyes." She smiles at this and squeezes his shoulder. She is still on her back and he is on his side. He is drawn into her heart by those eyes. "The sky that we know as blue ends, the Atmosphere that surrounds earth, gravity, oxygen, ozone layer, it all ends. But yet they say the universe has no end.
"What do you mean? That there is something beyond the blackness?"
"Time ends, life ends, our world ends, the sun will end. The universe must end as well."
"A lot of what you are saying is timed, a man made thing."
"Time, distance too, both, yes man made; but you can not ignore how things end."
"Okay fine, but is that not heaven?"
"That's where I am unsure. Everything comes from something. For something to be it must have always been. So to me, there is something beyond the stars, what it is we wont know until we search harder. Personally, God or Heaven, seems much too easy. Something created us and this, all this around us. Where did God come from? To me he still could not come from nothing. Even the creator should have a creator."
The night fades away from my memory.
It has ended...my memory has ended...the pain has ended...

Clarity
Lost Carnival
I sit here and listen to those around me. Noticing that we are shy, quiet. Assuming we are wrong before we even let out a voice. The way we think is lacking. We are dreamers, no; we are loosing our ability to dream. When these people around me close their eyes their minds do not light up into a carnival of ideas. When they sleep no longer do paths appear to wisp them away on journeys of things to come. They must remember or our generation is lost forever. We are not children, yet we are not adults; we are not one of the two.

Forward
My heart beats faster, I breath slower. It is blistering cold and the wind is slashing the snow through my skin. Yet I am forced to keep walking forward. Before I can grab at my jacket, it is thrown to the ground. Each step seems to strain my clothes, and pulls at my skin. All that my body wants is to stop the terror, but in life only our mind has control. My clothes seem to be tearing away, it is as if the snow and wind are cutting me bare. I still walk forward. My heart hurts, the beating cracks my ribs. My breathing is slowly fading more and more.

Enjoyment
I often lie awake at night with my eyes closed trying to pass into my unconscious. In this blackness the world is painted on the canvas which is my mind. I am unable to forget my worries, they are brought to life. Colour is given to them, each thought and want is played out before me. My eyes become a theatre for the occupants of my head. Then eventually the film becomes warm as the reel ignites, a burst of white then the theatre goes black; the occupants flee.
As I wake the camera starts recording once again. I feel a lack of motivation for the majority of my days. This I do not understand, I try to think back to when I was younger, to when my friends and I would spend our time during recess kicking a soccer ball against the public school walls. I never tried hard in school. I enjoyed the social part of the institution, not the educational part of the brick prison.
Today could be my last. Today could be my first.
Autumn
Passion
Two days of constant rain. This had to be a sign, a bad one at that. Driving further and further, the sky is only getting darker the closer I get to the war zone.
It was still dark when I left the house, not sure if that was because of the rain or if the sun has yet to come up.
I am a vigilante, one of the few good guys. Not like the cops, I'm not corrupt. All the cops in this town are into some kind of garbage or another. That's why I've been driving all day, or night, still can't tell. The only thing that I've got that can try and help me grasp the time of day is my watch, its 8...hmm... that doesn't' help. It could be day or night, doesn't really matter i tell myself.
I left her sleeping. I do not feel the need to bring her eyes to my vision of the world. I just left a note to remind her of my love.
I drive. I know where to go. It is easy really; I just follow the trail of blood that backs up the rain gutters. The dead bodies that line the sidewalks. these bodies have been dropped there by one thing. The first that drops its heavy mass hard and fast. I drive this Hell and my purpose is clear. I must hang the hallow and plant the horns back into the earth.
Not many see this pathway that I drive down. Not many see the love I have seen. Not many have a reason to see the truth. Many are happy to see the distortion which they live, and soon may die.
...
I stop driving here. I know I must walk the rest of the way. I must not be scared and I need more cold steel. These are my only weapons that I have. Being quiet will do nothing. This creature with wings and red skin can feel me coming. It can hear me breath. I shall not be burnt from the cold it possesses.
XIII, people say this brings bad luck. I'm here to prove their small minds wrong.
I arrive to a large field with grass so cold that flames leap from the tips. Thunder rips through the sky, blackness falls. The rain turns to flakes of snow which bounce from my skin. I see red but my eyes are not drowned in blood.
"I will rip the breath from your lungs just as you have done to millions across this world." My voice is ruff, I scrape these words from my throat.
"You will do no such thing! The darkness that surrounds you will consume you. The sky shall drop into your soul and you shall feel the heat of Ice like all the others."
I pull out my lovely steel; cold and smooth.
I gaze at the steel, then raise my eyes and carve from my throat only a few words, "kiss this steel and be as passionate as a man kisses his wife on his death bed."
Both chambers are unloaded and the blizzards of death consume all vision. Blackness that flows red. the cold steel smokes, empty cases melt through the flickering cold blades of grass. I walk forward to see the frost bitten mound of flames that is the walking God of life and death. The one who holds the bible in one hand and a spear in the other.
I came to do what I was able to do. The cold dark road starts to turn warm for most.
...
I make it to her bed once again. I write her a note to show her how much I love he even though I told her this before we slip away into the land of dreams. I leave this on my pillow.
...
I am in the quietest place ever imagined. I will not see or be seen again. To bring death to such a being was to bring my own death.
I chose this to save her. I will not go to light or fire, there is no such thing. I shall be cold for eternity and she shall live for a life.
You cannot escape the Black snow flakes that pears the heart and rip the mind bare...almost bare...I still think of her.

Accused
I feel no remorse for evading a touch that to me would bring pain and suffering to those around me.
How is it that I am frowned upon by those around me for only doing what it is that I feel should be done.
Right and wrong have no voice, they are merely angles on my shoulder that have had their lips sewn shut with a poisoned needle, the thread is rusted wire that will never loosen.
Bring to me my vindication.
Why should a person that has done nothing wrong be punished for that which they are blamed for by those that had not one eye open to atrocity?

Excerpt from what is to come.
The room is filled but nobody seems to be in it. I miss her. Laken and I have been dating for just over two years now and each day is a dream that I never want to wake up from. Last winter, we would walk in the snow, just the moon light to guide us. The cute way we have snow fights and she runs so I have to chase her just to hold her tight in my arms. She smiles the type of smile that never ends and I am rendered speechless because her blue eyes seem to glow.
I notice all her quarks. She tries to hide them more then me because she knows that I will tease her for them. The way her left eye brow moves up when she eats. How she has "blond moments" or so we call them. With these tongue twisters she normally catches her teeth half way through the sentence. But her other catch is that she can not hide things from me and me from her. So no matter how "special" these moments are I always manage to find them out. When she has not slept a full eight hours, this is normally because she has left an essay until the night before the due date. Yet she easily pulls through it and gets higher marks then myself. On these nights that she does not get sleep, she becomes one extreme or another. First, and most often, she becomes happier then happiness itself. On these nights she has a knack for impersonating an Alabama accent, or so she calls it. No matter how much sleep her eyes tell me she needs her words make me laugh in my dreams until I realize that I have not fallen into my nightly comma but rather I am awake with her. Then there are the other nights that in an eye lashes dance she is crying and just needs to be held and I kiss her forehead and she melts into me, I feel her pain, I try to absorb all of her worries until we fall upwards and sleep seems beautiful.
It is 6:52 pm and I am going to be late to meet Laken. We are so similar yet so different. Being late is our motto. Even though I told her I would be there eat 7:00 she automatically changes it to 7:15. She knows me and I know her.
I know that as I am walking to her residence on campus that she is frantically jumping out of the shower. Then going through the mountain of dirty clothes to reach the clean ones. I know that as I knock on her door she is putting on just the right amount of make up. The eye shadow, the cover up, the mascara and the odd time she puts on lipstick but normally just lip gloss.
Once she opens the door she leans forwards with one sweet motion, her hands fall around my neck and her weight is on me. She kisses me just to see me smirk that half smile smirk and then I wipe the lip gloss from my lips. She says it is funny to pick on my little quarks that with anyone else I would get mad at but with her she knows I just find it cute because, well, just because. The way she brushes her blond hair, that to her never seems to cooperate but it always looks perfect especially when it is drooped across my neck when we cuddle in bed.
We hugged, we kissed, we lie motionless in bed. Love is not a question, the room is painted in it. As I lie there my mind swims, questions of nothing, thinking of everything. The moon seems to glow making shadows in the court yard that I see as I look out the window. These shadows are people. They are in love and as the constant flow of clouds sweep by the light for half the world, the shadows never part. Even among natures interference love remains. Always shifting but never leaving.
I slowly doze off, everything fades away but the room still glows.
...
Class. You have got to love class. Actually, the only reason why I do not look forward to class everyday is because this is my fourth year and I still do not know what to do after this. What career should I choose? With a BA in Classical Studies there are not too many doors that burst open for me. Douglas Coupland once wrote, "we are over educated and under employed." I thought when I first read those words he merely was depressed and tried to show a state of mind. I looked much to deep into his work. I now see that he literally meant, when I graduate in spring I will be much too educated for the low end job that I will overtake in a dead end place.
...
There is a fine line when talking to people. Whether it is saying too much or too little. But when it comes to Laken, I feel there can never be too much to say. I talk about her constantly. My friends all tell me to shut up as soon as my mouth opens and my face transforms into hearts. They say this because of jealousy. They tell me it is because it is annoying to hear me constantly talk about her. Come on though, these same friends have only flash memories of the last girl they slept with. The true translation to "shut up you talk about her too much" is "god I wish I could have what you have. The love, the security, the trust, and the feeling that if tomorrow never comes it might be alright because what means the world to me is in my arms." Instead of acknowledging this my friends insist on a guys night out. To them this is another opportunity to fail at love and gain another flash memory.
The alarm clocks buzzer ruins any thoughts of happiness that I have as I wake. This unhappiness soon leaves as I open my eyes to see a picture of Laken. Maybe we are too in love. That sounds stupid to me. How is that possible? I think that we are actually in love but the world sees so little of this phenomenon that most people feel it must be unreal. For them to make sense of this situation they create a flaw.
...
We meet for dinner at the cafeteria where of course, she goes straight to the desert buffet where she takes a piece of pie and three cookies. Then after her sugar intake has been exceeded for the next week she seems content to move to the actual meal part of the cafeteria which was luckily Lasagna.
...
The white fluff has been falling softly for the past few days. The snow is just over the ball of my ankle. When it is like this Laken and I go for walks down the paths behind the University. The moon always seems to find its way through the clouds to light our journey. Laken is the playful type. The type that always finds a way to bring me to life. Soon enough I find myself chasing her playful laughter through the un-walked paths. I catch her of course. Mostly because I am faster but partly because she wants me too.
We spend hours in the maze of trees. Snow flakes and foot prints, knowing the whole time that snow has been trickling into my shoes soaking them completely but not caring a bit. These are the things that love holds in its palm. In my palm I find her.
She gasps that gasp that she gets when she has thought of something she desperately wants to do. It is followed by the question that we both know my response will be yes too. "Snow angles! Can we make snow angles?" We walk over to a clear spot of snow close to a giant willow tree. The bark still reads "R + L Forever" bordered by a heart. We carved this emblem when we first discovered these paths and just as it reads it will be there forever, love never dies. Below the whispering branches, hand in hand snow angles are formed.
We walk slowly back to her place where we sleep happily.
It snowed again last night. It was a nice surprise too look outside the frosted window and see a flat white world. No foot prints of others. It is like a clean slate, a white board just for us to write our lives on. I look over at her, she is still in bed smothered in blankets. I catch her starring at me. She says she likes to look at me but it always makes me blush. She is not much of a morning person, she would hold those covers forever if I would crawl into the warmth with her.
"Come on, lets go get some breakfast." I tell her this knowing exactly what she will say to me.
"Nooooooo. Lets sleep Rory, I want you to lie with me." She says this with sleep still in her eyes and the most adorable whining in her voice.
"No, come on, it's 10:00 already, I've got class soon. Come on you lazy bum, get up!" All she does is bury herself further under the blankets.
"half an hour more? Please!" She mumbles this from under the blankets.
"Fifteen minutes." She is so stubborn that these fifteen minutes soon turn into half an hour.
...
After class I go home to shower, then decide to walk over to Laken's house to see her for the night. I bury my hands deep into my pockets trying to escape the cold and start walking. The snow is full and fluffy. I have to cross the road like every other night, but it is cold and biting outside. As I move towards Laken's place my foot prints are erased almost as soon as my feet are lifted. They are only single tracks. I am walking alone, with out Laken. And unlike when we are together my prints are erased. My life is not being created. Am I at a stand still? I am alone. Laken is not here walking with me, our strides are not matching each other. I see now that she helps me. She makes my foot prints stay in the snow. The wind and the snow may just be playing games with my heart though. I will soon be with her. This is just me over thinking the snow falling.
...
During the night as I was sleeping I had a dream, actually more of a nightmare. I dreamt that as I was walking home from Laken's house last night when I was crossing the road. The wind and snow was so harsh and blowing that I could not see as well as I thought. I felt I had enough time, I thought I would make it, I thought he could see me. As I crossed the road I felt a sudden jolt of pain. but that was all. It was quick, no broken bones, no blood. But, I was, well, dead. I was given the after life. I was given the ability to relive the happiest things in life, the things that I choose to relive, my fondest memories. Obviously I chose Laken. But, as I relive these moments and memories I would not know it, time would just over lap itself and I would not be aware of it.
The scariest part about dreams like this is that you never know if they are real or just a dream.
...
It is fall still, the leaves scattering in a refreshing, cool burst of wind. However the snow flakes are fading. They do not seem to make a mark on the ground. But still they fall. I tend to over think the stupid things in life. These white drops that float to the ground but never seem to actually touch down make me think about all the things in life that start but never end. And how so many things in life are said and done but what are the effects? Will I be something? Or someone? But this is just me over thinking the first snow fall of the year.
Weird I feel as if that has happened before.

Past Hands Hold Tight
A single leaf. This piece of nature buds and grows full and lush, then slowly over time lets go of it's green skin and darkens to the reds and oranges that light the forest even on the darkest nights. This cousin to paper has such simplicity mixed with microscopic complexities and yet has no fears of letting go of it's whole. The roots of which are so far buried. This little piece of life sheds it's self and does not leave a tear to remember it by. I envy this remarkable thing, a leaf boasts of bravery.
I want so much to just let go of the things that hold me so tight. We all have dealt with this type of emotion. The letting go of someone so close. A person that has become part of you and knows you so completely that you are scared by it; scared even more when they are no longer there to understand you when you no longer can. This is one of our biggest unconscious fears in life. The idea of no one there to help you understand yourself.
Love shall ruin us, with out love we are already ruined.
We go through so many fears to obtain this one thing that will make us brave, and once obtained we are only leaving ourselves open to become terrified. We go through the stages of letting someone into our life and letting them see us at our worst which makes us tremble with fear but we soon over come this and are ready to face the armies of the world as long as the person that we have become part of, the person that holds us close at night and whispers in our ear, "love, I have this for you, remember this and we'll smile for eternity." is with us. If they are there we are fine. Having such a person leaves us open for the greatest fear; loneliness bites hard and viciously.
I am sitting here, dreaming with eyes open of the days that were had, the days that are to come, the days that are with me. We all will be able to let go of what our pasts grip our hearts with. Time is a mystical creation, with it we can change infinite things. Time however takes just that, time. We must live and go through a waiting period before we shall feel like ourselves again after an ordeal so grave as loosing someone close to us. We shall never forget our past but will be able to move away from it with only flips of a calender, and rotations of a clock. Fear will still haunt us.
I wish I was a leaf.

The Beggining of Our End
We wake thinking of how to start our day, whether we should walk, jog or run, eat fruit, fried eggs or cereal, start a a job, a career, or the after life. As we are going through life we have this idea that we have to start something big, start something that will end our lives with a point, that one and only "purpose" as most refer to it as. Our daily actions are only driven by our want to leave our mark within society.
A student can not wait until he or she is done school to get into the real world, or in some cases a student can wait and enjoys the postponed adult hood, as I call it, that is offered by post secondary education. However, the student in either case is still going through the starting point, the beginning of what will be their end. The student studies and then graduates to gain the pre-requisites needed for their future goals in life. These goals are what they have set to push themselves and succeed in life. They are so motivated to start this journey that will lead them straight to the end, and they are more then willing to do this, to take these steps. They jump off a bridge with perfect vision, gazing at the jagged rocks below; each one smiling. How can this be? How can such a fresh mind be so willing to hurry their end? They want so much to leave a mark on the world that they end up sacrificing themselves.
A career driven worker for all the businesses that offer promotions. Each one of these, each one of you, go through the grids of transportation to reach a place that makes you depressed so that you have a better chance at making the money that you crave, getting that bonus, the addition on the house, the cottage on the lake. Somehow this rushing makes them happy and allows them to enjoy what it is they are earning. Ask yourself if you are enjoying it. They strive so hard to push themselves further to the edge of oblivion. Each morning they wake and jump at the sound of the gun to start so that they can ever faster reach the end. Just think, the job will end, and come to a grinding halt but so will the heart that floods your veins with life.
These starting points that we are all so eager to line up at are drilled into our heads that they will bring us happiness in the end. The end which seems to be retirement at the age of 65. How is it that we are no longer able to slow down and live what we have at the time? So many of the people around us start their days with the thoughts of ending them burning and pulsing their motives into action. They want to start their life so that they can sit back and relax after they have a nice little nest egg to relax on. We need to let go of this ideology and re-invent our society in so many different ways. Start by living your life day by day, no longer should you sit and dream of that retirement but live the dreams you have at the time you have them.
Of course we can not just up and leave our jobs that make us miserable to go and hope on the next plan to Cancun, but we can enjoy what we have in our lives. We do not need to through away our happiness for future plans of money and fame. Many people work to afford to do what they love. Why do this? Why not do what you love as your work? We do have this luxury in our society to do this, we just need to let go of our fears and take a few more chances. Stop living your life with the idea of the end as your motives to go on each day. Start living your life with the idea of today as the motives to go on each day. The end that you look for will find you whether you search it out or not, so relax and enjoy the now.
